    behemoth indeed. ...reading....

This is fabulous stuff! Many thanks.

Wow are you the first person to have done this analysis so thoroughly? One one hand (the "duh, every PR firm/marketing person/etc. should have done this already" side), I'm surprised; on the other hand (the "no one ever thinks about things like this analytically anymore" side), I'm not surprised at all.

    Kudos!

This definitely falls into the latter category (I think) -- I imagine that are plenty of internal/confidential analyst-y style reports, but nothing public that I can tell. Thanks!

This is part of my great -- "empty out some room in my brain by backing it up on paper" initiative -- very therapeutic.

Josh, this level of thoughtfulness demonstrates your own skills as a blogger quite well. I know a blog where such skills would fit a particularly good fit! :)

    Josh,

thanks for your incredibly well thought out post. i'm glad to see it for a number of reasons. first of all, that someone is "getting us" over at mashable is incredibly gratifying. at some point early in the year, the editorial staff sat down with Pete (virtually) and said "what's our strategy going forward?"

The way you described it is almost exactly what we were shooting for.

In terms of a post like this - I've wanted to read something like this for a while - a breakdown blog by blog that discusses it in a way that isn't just inside baseball of our rivalries and actually analyzes the styles.

    Good job, all around.

Thanks dude! Am totally had home sick as a dog today so just finally logged into FF. Rock. on.

Want to know a weird way to find a post? Rizzn's comment popped up in my FriendFeed, and I thought it was so interesting that I wanted to read the article. VERY interesting stuff, and quite an analysis. In fact, it made me think about myself and what might come next in 2009. See, I'm stupid. I built a top 100 site around my own stupid name. Grrrr.

Anyhow, really good analysis, and I liked the spreadsheet, too.

Thanks, Chris! I'm laughing aloud about your personal branding comment. Hehehe.

Like Chris I also discovered your post through Mark's comment on FriendFeed. I have only really got into following tech blogs this last year and everything that you have covered here is how I would see the sites you speak about.

I came across ReadWriteWeb at the start of the year from showing an interest in lifestreaming and the other sites followed shortly after. Each have become my starting destination in Google Reader and when I want to follow the latest stories. Great post and well worth the read!

Thanks, Joe! And thanks again to FF;) Glad to hear that the analysis echos your own experience -- I often worry that the way we see ourselves within ye olde tech bubble is out of touch with large swaths of the community. . .

Great analysis Josh ... not sure who told you "techcrunch for the floyover states" but that's not far off ... someone else once wrote "the intouch weekly of social networking news" :-)

I don't know if I'd go so far as to call us a "crowdsourced" model though - the majority of our content is contributed by regular staff - though we just did add 2 new regular writers - Doriano Carta and Leslie Poston - which may make it look like we're pulling more content from the crowd.
  • Josh Dilworth · 1 year ago
Thanks! Hehehe the InTouch Weekly comment is hilarious. You're right re: crowdsourcing -- but there's a word that I'm looking for and just not finding it. Ideas? There's definitely something there in terms of your openness and embracing of a diversity of opinions and backgrounds. . .and it's unlike Techcrunch, for example -- instead of sleeping on Pete's couch, your writers are in pretty much every case out there living the tech world in some way or another.

Also, congrats on bringing Leslie on board -- LOVE her.
