PR can help to build the credibility that companies need in order to stand out above the others

Re: What the heck is PR, anyway?

Thanks, Kyle! I'm working on another post -- "Why PR is a blue collar job" -- I think you'll like it;) Thanks for reading, too, I really appreciate it.

Re: What the heck is PR, anyway?

Josh, I love this thinking...one thing that has really put me off from blogging even myself is the horrible repetition of content by people who aren't actually DOING the work. I trust people who get their hands dirty, not pontificate from a lectern. You have a unique perspective as someone working at an agency, but also really knowledgeable about technology AND PR. This isn't some comment to kiss your ass, it's to make the point that not enough people are just simply rolling up their sleeves and getting to work on this stuff.

I think Aaron, you and myself need to get together and produce some joint kick-ass content...get people moving!

/kff

Re: What the heck is PR, anyway?

Heck yeah -- totally agree. And often the priorities for one company/start-up are very different than for another -- imitation is the sincerest for of flattery, but it sure doesn't work when it comes to marketing. Each venture owns a specific moment -- in time, in the market -- and the best PR teams understand this;)

Re: What the heck is PR, anyway?

JJD - Great post, as usual. I think you should be writing about PR related topics more, as your insight always gets me thinking.

You're right about looking at PR through the long term lens, and there are so many different types of services that you listed here firms can provide for clients.

One of the challenges I see a lot, especially with start-ups and companies with small budgets, is prioritizing the tasks (media relations, social media, awards, atypical opps, etc.) given the challenges they face.

The real value is when a company or PR team can come in, build a strategy that fits the budget and then execute on it.

It's really difficult to be successful if we only look at the parts and not the whole.

Good stuff!

Re: What the heck is PR, anyway?

"...there’s also a lot of new media douchebags out there..." Right on. Most accurate statement of the day.
